Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)  in manufacturing demands high standards of workmanship and strict adherence to QC codes. Over the past decade, there has been an increasing demand to replace radiography with ultrasonics. Ultrasonics is a safe, fast NDT method that provides exceptionally accurate data about the internal and surface integrity of cast, wrought, and welded materials. Codes such as ASME, AWS, and others have developed mechanisms allowing the use of ultrasonics instead of radiography. 

Techniques such as phased array and ToFD have vastly improved the probability of defect detection and the ability to characterise even the most difficult-to-detect defects.  The recent development of FMC and TFM has further enhanced the justification for using ultrasonics as the primary inspection tool.
