FMC TFM Techniques

Technology Design’s FocusScan RXII and TD Scan software offer cutting-edge inspection capabilities by integrating Full matrix Capture (FMC) and Total Focus Method (TFM). These advanced techniques are included with the FocusScan RXII, making advanced inspection accessible to all users without additional investment. In addition to FMC/TFM, the system supports Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD), Conventional Phased Array, and Pulse Echo techniques, ensuring a comprehensive suite of inspection methods.

Flexible Tx/Rx Matrix Configurations

Users can choose between FMC, Half Matrix Capture, or define Custom Matrix configurations. This flexibility helps optimise processing power to increase scan speed, making advanced imaging techniques more efficient.

Enhanced Imaging with TFM

TFM, the software component of the FMC/TFM system, converts FMC data into an intuitive B-scan image.  The imaging can be displayed in different user-selectable formats depending on the application and the need for increased scan speed.

Optimised Performance

Whilst conventional TFM displays the highest resolution images, it is highly processor-intensive, making it too slow and, therefore impractical for most production scanning applications. To overcome this limitation, TD Scan provides three alternative imaging techniques that reduce processing demands. These techniques utilise modified element combinations with multiple transmit (Tx) apertures, while reception (Rx) occurs on all active elements.  By significantly reducing the number of Tx/Rx combinations, these methods lower processing overhead, resulting in faster scan speeds without compromising image quality:

  • Plane Wave Imaging (PWI) – A simplified method that enhances scan efficiency.
  • Virtual Source Imaging – Linear – Uses defined transmit apertures that simulate an electronic linear scan.
  • Virtual Source – Swept – Simulates a swept or sectorial scan using definable transmit apertures.

Phase Coherence Imaging (PCI) – Further enhances defect detection and may be applied to any of the above techniques. PCI compares the underlying FMC data for each pixel to identify coherence in the phases of the unrectified signals.  The improved signal-to-noise ratio highlights defects by making flaws more distinguishable.

With the integration of FMC and TFM in TD Scan software, Technology Design offer an efficient advanced ultrasonic solution with superior imaging. The inclusion of multiple matrix configurations and imaging techniques ensures that users can optimise scan speed without compromising on accuracy. This makes the FocusScan RX II an invaluable system for high-performance non-destructive testing applications.
